Cosmetic Dentistry for Overall Health

When most people think of cosmetic dentistry, they think of dentist services like teeth whitening and dentures. While these procedures are common, cosmetic dentistry is a diverse field encompassing many different dental treatments. The best treatments vary with a patient’s needs and medical history.

One of the most common cosmetic dentistry procedures is orthodontics. Orthodontics deals with correcting crooked teeth and other issues caused by the structure of the mouth and jaw. Orthodontists are able to determine what causes teeth to be positioned the way they are, and how they will move and shift with further development. In addition to straightening teeth, orthodontists are able to correct overbites, underbites, and crooked jaws.

People who have teeth that are correctly positioned but chipped, broken and cracked may benefit from tooth bonding. By building off the existing tooth with resin and dental porcelain, dentists are able to return a tooth to its original, unbroken shape. Tooth bonding is less expensive than installing a veneer, and can last longer when properly maintained. Veneers are thin porcelain plates that are used to replace damaged tooth enamel and improve the appearance of the patient’s teeth.

Implants (with crowns) and bridges are used to replace missing teeth. Implants are often made of metal and screw into the gum to support surrounding bone structures. A porcelain crown is sculpted to look like the missing tooth, and is attached to the implant. A bridge is used to replace multiple missing teeth. Porcelain crowns are created, but instead of being screwed into the gum with an implant, they are attached to the surrounding teeth, filling in the gap in the gum.

While some people may see cosmetic dentistry as something that is only for vain people, it can actually have an enormous impact on dental health. Missing teeth, left untreated, may contribute to bone loss, muscle degeneration, and poor nutrition. If you think you may need a cosmetic procedure, talk to your dentist about your concerns.
