You may not realize it, but your oral health is more important than you think. This sentiment is something the field and practice of dentistry has understood for sometime now, however people are just beginning to understand the complex link between dentistry and being healthy.

When most people think of general dentistry, it’s common for images of dental implants or dentures to come to mind. But did you know that the field of dentistry encompasses much more than that? Dentists are your first line defense against potentially dangerous conditions such as gingivitis, which requires gum disease treatments. Conditions such as gum disease can worsen over time and may lead to infections in other areas of the body. While this may seem surprising it’s important to remember that your mouth is the gateway to your body cavity. In fact, the crucial metabolic process of digestion begins in the mouth!

Regular dental check ups are just one out of things people should do to maintain their oral and overall health and well being. Practicing good oral hygiene at home is just as important. This includes regular brushing after meals or at least twice a day, regular flossing, and even tongue brushing.
